Homemade fish/coral food cubes
« on: November 04, 2009, 09:23:22 AM »
I haven't determine if this is more hassle than it's worth but I figured I'd post it anyways. It does give me a way to know how much food I'm putting in the tank.
One day after feeding I accidentally put my Rod's food in the refrigerator rather than the freezer.
The next morning I noticed it wasn't completely thawed but pretty close. I contacted Rod's and they said as long as it didn't get warm it will be safe to refreeze. So that got me thinking. Insteed of break pieces off a sheet and not really know how much I'm adding why not make some cubes. Here's what I came up with.

I stuff as much of the Rod's I can in a shot glass and add a cube of cyclops. Let it thaw just enough that I can work with it. It's about the consistency of a slurppee.
Took some egggrate 5x3 and smoothed down the edges with a dremel. I did this so they wouldn't tear the foil

Wrapped it up in the foil.

Then added the food. By chance each square hold darn close to exactly a 1/4tsp.

Wrapped it up and place it in a freezer safe ziplock baggie

Next day the cubes just pop right out. I place them in the same ziplock and now I have measured 1/4tsp of food per cube.

It may sound like a lot of work but I only let it thaw about 5 mins and it takes about 10 more to get it wrapped up and into the freezer. Still not sure if the "juice is worth squeeze". You decide.  ;D

I used egg crate when I made my own homemade stuff.  While it worked very well, it was also a PITA to press each cube out.  I used two pieces that were 12" x 12" so there were a lot more to do.

Next time I make the food I will probably just put it in a ziplock and lay it flat to freeze.  Then cut it up with a knife to uniform size pieces.

this would be a good way forsomeone who makes their own food from scratch to accurately freeze and feed their foods. ive been wanting to make my own frozen foods for some time now. that way i know it doesnt have filler or misc bingind agents in it.
as cool as aquarium nerds can get.
