Anthias?
« on: October 29, 2009, 07:52:42 PM »
Okay, this is an absolutely stunning fish and seen in most great looking reef tanks. I stare at them like a fat kid in a cupcake shop everytime the LFS has them in and everytime I ask "do they really need to be fed twice a day"?
Inevitably the responsible LFS people say yes and sometimes more. Its not that I dont have the time to feed them but my lights arent on til almot 11:30 and Im gone that time of day till later in the evening. For those of you with anthias of any kind do you actually feed yours twice a day? What kind do you have?
What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss

I kept 4 Lyretail Anthias in my 260 for a little over 4 years. As soon as I got home (5-6pm) I'd toss some food in and then again around 9pm just before the lights went out. Lights ran from 1:30-9:30. They seemed to well with that schedule.

okay cool, thats what I was hoping to hear....I did fine with the seahorses so there is no way anthias are as difficult. And by the way we need to get together and do some trading at some point....eventually I will have something worthwhile haha

Sounds good. Both my big tanks are shut down but I've got a 55 and 29 that are starting to come around.  :)

sounds good man, Ive decided to go ahead when I reset up this tank when I move to grab some anthias and also going to get a sohal..... can get one about 2-3" and it will be roughly the same size as my hippo which is pretty peaceful for now. that should pretty much end my fish buying for this tank unless I get a mandarin again.

I really enjoyed my Lyretails but I think when I set up either tank again I'll go with Bartletts. From what I'm reading and hearing they are more peaceful than the Lyretails.

My Maldives Lyretail pair, and just the male.

I dont even feed my tank every day, let alone my anthias twice a day or more every day.

I origionally bought a trio and the male died, the current male did a sex change a month later, it took it 2 weeks to go from full female color to full male.

I have some anthias and use an automatic feeder to drop in some pellets 3 times a day

well thats an idea I hadnt thought of...I have decided to go ahead and get a few when I move and figure there is so many with them that they cant be any harder than most other fish. if I need to feed more I will just feed more.

Where does this saying come from where anthia's need to be feed multiple times a day? I'm just wondering as I have no experiences with them.

I have read it in Marine fishes and Reef Aquarium fishes both by Scott Michael. And in a few other posts by fish nutrition "experts". From my understand Anthias are zooplankton feeder. They are highly active fish that forage constantly through out the day. Since their food normally isn't readily available in a reef aquarium we need to supplement with an increase feeding schedule. 2x a day or more.

Most anthias are plankton feeders, but most healthy ones can be converted onto prepared food easily. I have the pocket expert books as I am sure a good majority of marine hobbyist have. It really amazes me the amount of feedings they say most of these marine fish need. I have tried out a variety of anthias and I have found that the tri-colors, pinks, lyretails and bartletts are the hardiest. I feed all fish 2 times a day at the shop and 1 time a day at home. When we import fish, they come in skinny due to the shipping process, therefore they need the extra nutrients to get them back to 100%. A healthy fish really only needs a good feeding once a day. If they are in a reef tank, they should have enough food in the tank. Fish are scavangers too. Assuming you are feeding your corals a variety of food, then the fish will have food between feedings.
