Hi Folks,
I'm posting this mostly for the purpose of letting some of the less experienced folks know that bad stuff happens to all of us. I'm altogether certain that some of you will feel much worse about this than I do. This is not the first, nor the last time something like this will happen to me or you. I would like to think I have learned to take it in stride. Here's my story:
I woke up this morning with a whopping headache, luckily it's going away now. At about 9:30, I checked on the new corals I got on Friday to see of it was time for more photos for my thread. I'm looking around the tank and notice my Gold Maxima clam is dead as doornails.
I do not have a photo of him it yesterday, but it looked fairly normal. It had come detached from its rock a few days ago (this should have been a warning to me) so I moved the rock a little and put it back in place. As of yesterday, the mantle was extended some but not as much as usual.
So you don't have to look at another thread, here is what it normally looks like:

Here are a few shots of how it looks today:

Needless to say, I took it out right away. So my oldest Crocea has been showing some wrinkles around the margin of its mantle for the last few days as well. I spent some time in one of my books, figured it had pinched mantle and did a 30 minute fresh water dip. They don't react very well to this, but I've experienced this before. Here is what it looks like after the dip:

Keep in mind that this is normal after a dip, and at this time I expect a full recovery.
So while the dip is going on, I take a look in the cabinet and noticed that I had gone through three gallons of water in less then a day, and my sump level is down low too. I had 3/4" of water in the bottom of my cabinet. It seems I knocked the ATO hose out of the sump during maintenance yesterday. I pulled everything out and cleaned up the water, got the sump level back to normal and everything is normal again.
Here is a shot during the clean up:

I took a really good look at everything else in the tank and it all appears normal. I guess the moral of the story is that bad things happen with aquariums, its good to be ready for them, and we need to be able to move on when we lose things.
I hope you have all had a better morning than I have. This could have been a lot worse, and I know it.

Russ
