a little cautious
« on: May 21, 2009, 04:58:57 PM »
So to get my chiller up and running with an external pump (mag 7). I've had to use pvc piping with threads and to prevent leaks I got some pvc tape which I wrapped around the pvc threads. The chiller and pump are not up and running quite yet, I am waiting for the silicone to dry on the non threaded parts. I was wondering as the days get closer, if the pvc tape is ok for the aquarium water?

Do you mean teflon tape on the threads by any chance? I have always used teflon tape on PVC pipe threads in my aquariums with no problems. Teflon is pretty much chemically inert. Normally I would not use silicon for PVC, the PVC cement actually welds the pieces together for a really good joint.

Ive been using the yellow teflon tape for years now, its for gas pipe threads and is really thick, even the pink stuff is better than white, What exactly were you sticking together with silicon? if its on the pressure side it could come apart very wetly lol

I'm using the silicone to keep the 90 plastic elbow from leaking between the pvc pipe. Those have no threads and are those stick together kinds. I'll post up some pics when I have the chance to.

Hey Eric,
You really might want to consider using PVC cement for that kind of pipe joint.

+1 on PVC cement,  if you want it to be removable for maintanance splice a union in one side or the other for a quick disconnect.
