Hosser's Wifes Seahorse Tank Build
« on: April 12, 2009, 06:43:12 PM »
Let me stress this is my wifes pet tank, Im enthused but this is really for her rather she admits it or not haha.  A LFS has dropped a ton of money into raising their own seahorses which are sold eating frozen foods already. We decided to go ahead and start getting ready to have a pony tank. The 29 gallon tank I had will be their new home. So lets begin with the stand. Under no circumstances do I feel I wont be made fun of for it ( you will see what I mean haha).
So started off with a basic 2x4 stand. Fit so that the lip of the tank fits just inside a piece of trim. Built it with birch and aspen panels for cost and the fact it was going to be painted anyways.

The dog helped me ALL day, I was a bit annoyed, but I think if he were a human he would be quite the construction worker. Loved the tools.

Im doing a 10 gal sump, a section where the overflow goes will have a DSB small but it will do the job. The second chamber is for cheato , and the last chamber is for the return pump.

I painted the back and bottom of the tank where it would be exposed. I made enough room in the stand for a CPR Bak Pak skimmer that I have.

Now here is where I plan on getting made fun of but when you see the finished product you will probably agree my wife has some pretty cool ideas for stand finishes.

While the paint dried waiting for the "finish" I decided to snap a pic with the sump in it

I will be finishing the stand hopefully tomorrow and then get it set and ready to transfer sand from a bucket into the tank and the sump. I have to use my 60 acrylic to house my fish while I let the tank settle since they are all now in the tank I need to use.

This will be moved to the seahorse thread as soon as Adam is done being hungover.<I'm done.lol>

What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss

If I get home early enough tomorrow it will be done finish wise. The material Im finishing it with takes 2-4 hours to set before I can aplly the top coat then I have to clear it out.

Okay time to man this stand up (somewhat anyways)
It still will get a gloss coat possibly depends on how we feel about it after it dries up. Still girly but cool in its own right too. The ALL pink parts will be hidden by the way

Its a Valspar product (im sure others have it too) you paint the base coat, whatever color you want to show through then put a coat of weathering goo basically and then paint within 3 hours and the paint crackles like that . They have one that does a porclein break too.

Okay last pics of the stand before the tank build starts.

Feet will be painted grey by the way.

and with 10 gal sump

Now as I was putting the hinges on and the knob I was thinking to myself just how girly this stand looks, then I remembered someone saying thet seahorses are a little girly of a fish as well. Which made me think of a tag line for this Seahorses and Pipefish section
" seahorses are the my little ponies of the sea"
More to come

Hoss I notice in your pic you missed a spot when you were painting.  Let me know if you can spot it :)), it is in an area you might want to touch up tho cuz once you notice it it really does stand out. (hint: look down)

I mentioned with the pics that the feet will be painted grey all the way.

actually I was going to hit the legs when I did the grey but you have to flat MOVE when your using the weathered undercoat, you got about 10 seconds to get paint on and brushed out before it gums up too much and ruins the finish, the legs were the least of my worries last night, I threw the door on and took pics. The legs will be coming off because Im going to drill out and add in fully adjustable bottoms place holders to adjust for level and plumb. Used the feet to get it off the ground to paint it. When I do the fancy stand for the rimless it will have legs inverted in the stand that you wont see when the trim is on but can be wrenched out for heigth and plumb

Yes I will be having a pipe fish or two and absolutely going to put a mandarin in there. Once I can get my reef inhabitants out of their tank I will get the 30 moved over and load it with cheato and the rock and dose it heavily with pods. Let it sit for a week or two and then start with the ponies....after a few months will start dosing pods on a regular basis. Hopefully pull off a mandarin within the 3-4 month range depending on pod population

ynot harvest pods from one tank to the other...the new tank u are getting im assuming iwth a sump will ahve sufficient space for you to put one or two of those scrubbies in the sump to allow the pods to breed inside...then its a matter of taking one and ringing it outin the horse tank and alternating between the two scrubbies so one has stuff in it at all times. just an idea.
