John guest fitting failure
« on: March 14, 2010, 09:20:44 AM »
Man this could have been a major problem. Probably caused by my own doings. I keep my ro/di under the sink. So when it's time to change the filter and resin I remove the unit to better access it. Well this morning I had a slight problem. After changing everything and plugging all the hoses back in the John Guest fitting coming out of the di started pouring water out of it. Problem was I didn't notice it at first.  *frustrated* So about 2-3 gals of water leaked out. Thought maybe I just didn't plug the hose in all the way or the o-ring got twisted inside but the fitting actually needed to be replace. Luckily Home Depot had one.
Good thing I was doing laundry or who knows when I would have caught it. Also, I usually leave the unit on and just let the float valve shut it down. I think I'll only be filling during the day when I'm home and turning off the water while I'm away.  :-\

Mike,

Not sure this is what happened to you, but these fittings will slightly damage the end of a tube in order to seal.  Technically if you remove a fitting and reinsert the tube, you should trim the end of it off so you have a fresh section of tube for the fitting to grab onto.

Im glad you found the problem so quickly but man...this could have been one of those GREAT saltwater horror stories! ;)
Years of: wet floors, salt water up to my elbows, reading till my eyes hurt, 20,000 miles going to the LFS and club meetings,  QTs, slimy corals, broken pumps, overflowing RO units, bad test kits, algae...Can you believe this is the best hobby in the world?

Frogfish I think I've heard that before. Probably should have listened but I've been doing it like this for years. May need to move it for peace of mind.

Jimw369 I consider myself luck this time. Unfortunately I've had a couple of bone head horror stories. It ran for about 7-8 hours one night with the valve suck open.
