Okay guys I got a real tricky one here.
« on: February 19, 2010, 06:51:24 PM »
I will get pics asap.
Tank consists of 3 good sized hippo tangs,
a blonde Naso
a harlequin
a maroon clown
a puffer
undulated trigger

One of the hippos has a serious skin/flesh disorder. No other fish are affected, the ill fish eats perfectly, swims and is very active and shows no signs of distress what so ever.

Here is how bad the fish is, it actually has chunks of flesh that fall off, it appears almost leprous. When swimming through current in the tank it often has chunks fly off its body. No part of the fish is more affected than another part and yet it appears to be a degenerative disease  that isn't affecting anything else.
Ideas?
What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss

google HLLE (head and lateral line erosion)

somewhat common in tangs...I've seen several hippos who were sufferers or survivors of it....

Soak some Nori in garlic and Selcon. Feed him a little of that every day and before long he should get strong enough to take on a great white. If you don't have a grounding probe you need one. Watch your water condition. These are general hints and will help any sick fish. At least any sick fish that is still feeding!

Yeah if its HLLE its the worst case ever seen. I will get the pics from her soon as she emails them to me, I didn't question what exactly has or hasn't been done to medicate the fish to this point. The one in charge of the tank is very experienced with fish disease and recovery of marine fishes and it even baffles him. Only thing on WWM I found close was something Bob F wrote about to a concerned reefer going through what sounds like a easy case of the same thing and he mentioned it was just extraordinary and astonishing in rapid depletion.
The pics will show allot of what I'm saying....hope to have them sometime tomorrow

I have no problem with posting links as long as they are helpful. Especially from WWM since I'm a WWM crewmember lol.

Thanks Adam, I was Adminon a little site that unfortunately died off, and that was my take as well. Do you know Josh S? He's part of the WWM crew as well. He's also Persident of our local club. I'm mentoring director.

As an aside (sorry about the hijack) I hope to see a lot of folks at MACNA, we are the host club.

I got the pics this morning, the fish looks worse in person beleive it or not. Michael I beleive thats my suggestion to them as well is to in the most humane way possible put the fish down.

Bob F says extreme case of HLLE.... I would have figured the fish would be long dead by this point from that which is why it seemed to be something else....

Worst case I've ever seen. Is there stray voltage? Something is SEVERELY stressing that fish. They need GARLIC and bad!!!!

Stray voltage doesnt seem to an issue but I can get something to test that with....and if it was stressing wouldnt it be acting funny?

Not necessarily, I mean the guy is rotting away as he swims, and I would imagine that HAS to be stressful! My understanding is that HLLE comes from chronic stress, not acute, so it could be something that he has long since accomodated to.

All you need to test for stray voltage is a multimeter, set to AC voltage, one probe to solid ground (I use an empty receptacle third hole) and the other to the tank water. I recommend using something other than the actual probe tip (but not COPPER) to the saltwater, unless you have disposable test probes.

I would also HIGHLY push for enriched food.
