MitchReef's Reef.....
« on: February 05, 2010, 09:13:04 PM »
I guess I need to put up a few snaps of my tank. It's just a lowly 75 and is virtually ALL DIY. When I set it up the only things I bought new were lightbulbs, lumber and PVC. I have it set up peninsular with a DIY falsewall overflow and a modified Herbie overflow. I have a 10G fuge and a Rubbermaid sump with EboJaeger heater and Octopus 110NW skimmer. Lighting is Phoenix 14,000K, 250W on one end and 150W on the other, supplemented with 2 Geisemann Actinic+ in TEC 2 reflectors. The hood and stand are fully enclosed and I handle heat with a DIY ducted fan blowing across the water surface, counter to the primary surface water flow, and a second small squirrelcage fan exhausting the hood. I evaporate about 3.5 gallons a day which accounts for over 27,000 BTU of cooling. Flow comes from an old BlueLine 1100 return pump, 2 X Koralia 4 and a couple of old powerheads on a wavemaker just to disrupt flow patterns. My sandbed is shallow, coarse and rich in shell meal. Live rock is Florida Aquaculture, Fiji Premium, Tonga Branch, Tonga Fusion and Marshall. I have my best success with SPS, and have some nice pieces.

Now for a few pictures:

There's a first installment.....more to follow.

Enjoy,
Mitch

What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss

Actually FrogFish, I've been lurking here since last July. I actually won a Glass-Holes 700 Overflow from y'all at the Southeastern Reef Confwerence! I just installed it on a 20L today. I'm going to make a frag tank out of it.

I take lots of pictures. I will post more soon.

Beautiful Tank!!! Love the colors.  *thumbs*
I have a couple shops in Orlando and get over there a few times a month. Always stop by WWC as it's just down the street from one of my last stops. Let me know if there's any other LFS I should check out while I'm over there.

They are really the only big guns shop in town. Sea In The City is good, but not quite a WWC caliber shop. Then again, where else is there a WWC caliber shop except in SoCal?

A few more shots since I'm in here:

I snapped a few fresh pics last might before the lights went off and figured I would share some:
Pinwheel zoa (just submitted to Coralpedia)

Purple Alien Eye Favia, this piece was severely colored down due to putting it in blasting light to promote repid growth. It went from 7 eyes to 30 in about a month. I recently split it and put one half in lower light and it's coloring up. It will end up a rich deep purple with those wild eyes

Pink Monkey Butts Chalice (I named it to poke fun at the chalice snobs)

BGWMASGM....chalice (Bubble Gum Water Melon Alien Swamp Gas Monster....chalice, also to poke the chalice snobs)

Tyree LE Dragon Soul favia

Here is a detail shot of that one

Atlantis Aquarium Meteor Shower Cyphastrea

My Trachyphillia geofferoi "Hosting" his little Matl Ocellaris

I really do have more than just SPS....see???? :D

Thanks a bunch Hosser, but I just snapped a couple of actinic shots and just HAVE to post one of them. It is my Area 51 favia, which looks like this under full lighting:

So, I popped this macro shot under the actinics, and when I pulled it up on the screen it nearly made me weep!!!! :'(

No...really...it's a Canon Point and Shoot. The biggest factor is a lot of practice with it. I got it just shy of 14 months ago, for Christmas , and I have over 2400 shots with it....

And they are all hand held!

Mitch beautiful reef. Are you doing any carbon dosing, Zeo, Prodibio, vodka, etc? If so, are you supplementing anything, aminos, etc?

I dose Oceans Blend 2-part through a DIY peristaltic pump dosing system, dosed at 3:00 AM and 3:00 PM, and I supplement Magnesium with plain Epsom Salt. That's all.

I never tried amino acids, but am strongly thinking about it. My problem is that I am way lazy so if I cannot automate it I can't really do it. Just old and wise enough to recognize that shortcoming.

BTW, thanks for the props.
