Big Dog Reefs (BDR) was created by two down to earth reef keepers who were hobbyists for many years prior to deciding to open their own aquaculture company. Many factors led them to venture into this business, but the two most motivating were ridiculous coral prices with fake branding and natural reef conservation. Here’s a note from John, owner of BDR explaining their company history and purpose.
Me and my partner Chris started dreaming of BDR when we realized we could no longer feel good about buying non aquacultured corals, but at the same time could not afford to stock an entire reef tank with “Ultra Rare” branded corals with huge price tags. Hats off to those with the wallets to buy $200.00 frags, but my wife would kill me (and Christ likes his family jewels right where they are!). We searched for an aquaculture company with affordable pricing, but failed to find one! That’s where the dream began. After our dreams became plans, our plans became possible and (with the help of some amazing friends, NEXT REEF) we started our small aquaculture company with 450 gallons over 2 tanks and a 100g sump.
This picture is the very first night BDR became a reality. Rocks went into the water, the sump went into place. The next day the sump was plumbed in, and the 100g tank was added.
It was the small beginning of a BIG idea. Something that we felt was needed in this business; an aquaculture company with NO BULL#$@%! There is NO reason to pay $200 for a few polyps on a frag plug, they are just Zoas! So we set out to build a solid parent stock of an assortment of coral which we could then grow and sell forever. That of course has the benefits of a smaller effect on the natural reef, and lower costs to our customers!
